Are you starting to see brown spots on your face and they seem to keep appearing? Due to carelessness and carefree-ness in my younger days, I’m paying for the lack of SPF protection now.

In this article, I’m going to share with you if applying apple cider vinegar on your face works and what kind of food and diet we should eat to stop them from appearing or even to lighten the appearance of it.

What are these brown spots?

The brown spots are known as age spots or liver spots. They are a type of hyperpigmentation that appear due to exposure to UV light, either by being under the sun or when you're doing indoor sunbathing. Age sports are very common in adults, especially those over the age of 50. However, younger people can get them if they spend lots of time under the sun. These spots can be tan, brown or black in color and they vary in size. They usually appear on the parts of the body that are exposed to sunlight, especially on the face, the neck, the shoulder and the hands.

Age spots are different from melasma, which is another type of hyperpigmentation. Melasma is usually patchy in appearance and can be caused by hormonal factors.

How do age spots or liver spots develop?

Our skin contains melanin and it is what gives our skin the color. Melanin gives us a tan when it is exposed to UV light. Age spots and liver spots develop when there is high concentration of UV light or when there is a clumping of melanin under the skin. Therefore, anyone can develop age spots but those with a lighter skin tone or fairer skin tone or has a history of frequent sunburn or sun exposure are more likely to get the condition.

What can we do to get rid of or lighten their appearance?

Fortunately, there are many treatments available such as medication, chemical peels and laser treatments. The pigment is located at the base of the epidermis, which is actually the top layer of the skin. Therefore, to lighten the appearance of the age spots or the liver spots, any treatment must be able to penetrate to the base of the epidermis or the level of skin.

For the purpose of this article, let’s take a look at the 3 Natural Treatments you can start doing today!

1. Apple Cider Vinegar Home Remedy

There are plenty of home remedies online and I've decided to try this particular home remedy because it is very simple and also because I have apple cider vinegar in the kitchen. Moreover, I am very curious to see whether apple cider vinegar works and if it causes a burn on the face. According to research, apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid which may help to reduce pigmentation.

The remedy starts with combining equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water, apply it to the dark spots, leave it for two to three minutes and wash it away with lukewarm water. Do this twice daily. I've tried it for a week.

Although the results are not noticeable, the experience has been pleasant. The remedy is fuss free and so I will likely continue this process for another month or two. Experts recommend a consistent use of this remedy for weeks and months to see possible noticeable results.

2. Follow a Healthy Eating Plan (e.g. Liver Cleansing Diet or Detox Diet)

Experts recommend a liver cleansing diet or detox diet to get rid of or stop spots from appearing. Regardless of the name of the diet, I realised that a healthy eating plan is the key.

Experts recommend

  • Consuming foods that are high in natural antioxidants

  • Consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily

  • Avoid artificial sweeteners

  • Avoid sugary processed food

  • Avoid deep fatty fried foods

  • Avoid margarine

  • Avoid all dairy products

  • Drink plenty of water

Currently, there is no scientific evidence to support that our diet can influence our liver function directly because our body has already in place a system to eliminate toxins effectively through our intestines, kidneys and liver.

At the end of the day, the healthiest, most effective and sustainable approach is always to lead an active healthy lifestyle.

3. Consume Raw Juices (especially Raw Carrot Juice)

Experts believe that raw juices are actually incredible healing tools that you can use to strengthen the bowels, kidneys and the liver. This may help to eliminate the toxins more effectively.

Raw carrot juice was particularly recommended because raw carrots are a good source of Beta-Carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that gives the fruits and vegetables its rich, red and orange color. Beta-carotene is converted into Vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A is especially good for the skin because it encourages cell production, strengthens the skin and hence strengthens the barrier against any harmful irritants.
